Tumlare. BUILT IN 1948

Project

She needed re-fit and F J Darley started in December 2013. The work required a commitment from shipwright and owner to build a trusting relationship to work and sail progressively over several years until the boat was sound and easily maintained.

The re-fit included complete strip-down with deck removed, replacing the bow stem-post and many ribs, re-cambering and replacement of deck beams, partial replacement of planking, re-nailing and roving, installing a ply & epoxy deck with new combing, cab, hatch and thwart, re-fixing floors and fitting a teak laid soul, building a new mast and tiller, installing electrics and pumps, making bronze cast and stainless steel fittings then guiding the re-rigging.

Ferdi's working method offers shipwright expertise balanced with patience and guidance. A deep knowledge of materials and techniques is openly shared, allowing the owner to do as much or as little to suit skill or time. The FJD shed is really a university for boat owners. I now have a beautifully restored Tumlare and the relationship with FJD continues. Charlie Salter
